Accounting for trades

For electricians, plumbers, builders and HVAC businesses in Australia: quote the job, turn the quote into an invoice, code materials and subcontractors properly, and keep GST and the bank in step.

Five things that take your time, and how Plain helps

Quote, then invoice

Send a quote and convert it to an invoice when the customer accepts, so the price you agreed is the price you bill.

Materials you recharge

Separate the materials you buy from the materials you recharge to customers, so your margin on parts is visible.

Subcontractors

Record subcontract trades against their own account and keep their bills, approvals and payments together.

Getting paid

Let customers pay invoices online by card (AUD). Today shows who is overdue.

Paying suppliers

Pay approved supplier bills in one batch with an ABA file for your bank.

Starter accounts for your trade

Choose Electrical, Plumbing, Building and renovation, or HVAC during setup. Each adds accounts such as:

  • Labour and call-out income
  • Materials recharged
  • Call-out and service fees
  • Materials and parts
  • Subcontract trades
  • Tools and small equipment
  • Vehicle and travel costs
  • Licences and permits

What Plain doesn't do yet

Plain doesn't do job costing by project or progress claims yet. If you need those, keep them in your job management tool and bring the invoices and costs into Plain.

Moving from another system

Read the guides for moving from Xero, MYOB or QuickBooks.
