How to chase late payments

Most late payments are forgotten, not refused. A clear routine gets you paid sooner without damaging the relationship.

General information only, not accounting, tax or legal advice. Check with your accountant or the ATO where a decision depends on your circumstances. Written 30 October 2026 · last checked 30 October 2026.

Make it easy to pay

  • Put the due date, the amount and how to pay at the top of the invoice.
  • Agree payment terms before the work starts.

A simple reminder routine

  • A friendly note a few days before the due date.
  • A reminder the day after it's due.
  • A firmer note at 14 days with the amount and a date to pay by.
  • A phone call at 30 days.

If it still isn't paid

  • Stop further work until the account is up to date.
  • Put a final notice in writing.
  • Get advice before using a debt collector or making a claim. Small business commissioners in each state can help with disputes.
